A Salute to Labor
Posted Sep 06, 2010
Ordinary people working hard doing the extraordinary. That's America and we pause on this day to salute your efforts. The American economy is the strongest economy in the world, and it was built by organized labor.
Organized labor has played a huge role in building America and will continue to do so through these tough economic times. When organized labor negotiates a contract, all Montanans benefit. Unions increase wages, support Main Street, prepare a dedicated and trained work force, and create a safer work place. The efforts of organized labor raise all boats.
It is thanks to organized labor that this country has a middle class. Elected leaders have a responsibility to support organized labor by supporting the Employee Free Choice Act—supporting the rights of all workers to organize, earn a living wage, and secure retirement pensions.
Organized labor is America's protection against corporate greed and exploitation. Through the values of their people and the dignity of their work, they build stronger families, better communities, and a better living standard for all Montanans. On this Labor Day 2010 – I salute the men and women of organized labor, their families and the work they do in their communities.
Have a safe and happy Labor Day.
