On The Issues

These are hard times for many Montanans.  The unemployment rate may have stabilized, but we still have way too many people looking for too few good jobs. And we have far too many people with little or no health care coverage. We also aren’t doing enough to achieve energy independence from foreign countries or to provide a first-rate education for the children of Montana.

To address these issues, we need real leadership…leadership that helps our nation and our state move forward, not the stonewalling we see every day from Congressman Denny Rehberg, whose politics of  NO is designed to protect Wall Street, Big Oil and other special interests. Denny Rehberg represents the special interests that have brought our economy to its knees, robbing us of our jobs and homes and squeezing us dry with out of control health care costs.

Now we need to start rebuilding our economy and putting America back to work. I served in the Clinton and Bush Administrations on the Trade Advisory Committee.  I understand the importance of international trade, which accounts for 15% of our GDP.  We need fair trade, not supposedly ‘free’ trade that only ends up outsourcing the American dream.  Every trade agreement must address fair labor standards and environmental concerns. Fair trade will bring good paying jobs back to the heartland as the laws of supply and demand restore balance to a market unbalanced by a decade of unscrupulous  greed.

Providing good paying jobs for Montanans will help them raise their families, educate their children, and build better communities.  Main Street will benefit and the Montana we all love will benefit.

We can only do that with leadership.

Here’s where I stand on the issues that I feel are key to building Montana’s future and holding on to the things that make our state so special:

Our state is in crisis and we need true leadership from our congressional representative. We can no longer afford the Rehberg politics of NO.  NO doesn't provide housing for Montana veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan.  NO doesn't provide affordable and accessible quality health care to hard working Montanans. NO doesn't improve our children’s educational system or guarantee them a better future.  And NO certainly doesn't help to keep intact for future generations the natural splendor that makes our Montana "The Last Best Place."  NO leads nowhere. Consequently, Rehberg has little to show for his nine years in the Congress.

Because he has accomplished so little during his time in Congress, Rehberg resorts to voting NO in Washington, then coming home and taking credit for the same projects he voted against – in my neighborhood, that’s like branding a calf you don't own.

Together, we have an opportunity to create a bright future-- but first we have to win this election and that takes money. Without your generous support and commitment, there will be two more years of Rehberg saying NO to you and your children. I know that times are tough. I appreciate your help all the more knowing that despite your tighter budget, you see the value in investing in better representation which results in a better Montana.  We can’t just wish Denny Rehberg away.
